Good Divorce Week 2025: Promoting respectful separation and family wellbeing
What is Good Divorce Week?
The week beginning the 10 November 2025 is Good Divorce Week. This is a national campaign led by Resolution, an organisation of over 6,500 family law professionals, including solicitors, mediators, financial advisors, and other specialists. Its core mission is to promote a constructive, non-confrontational approach to resolving family disputes such as divorce, separation, and child arrangements.
This Good Divorce Week, we are supporting Resolution’s campaign to show there is a better way to separate. We are committed to helping people resolve family issues away from Court, wherever possible. The main focus of their campaign this year is on their Code of Practice and encouraging Resolution members to promote a ‘better way’.
Resolution’s Code of Practice sets out the principles of a non-confrontational approach to family matters and emphasizes:
- Putting children’s best interests first.
- Acting with honesty, integrity, and objectivity.
- Helping clients understand long-term financial and emotional consequences.
- Avoiding inflammatory language and reducing conflict.
- Treating everyone with respect and without judgment
Why does it matter?
At present, the family Courts are overwhelmed causing long delays, stretched resources and a lot of stress for those families involved in Court proceedings. According to the latest statistics, on average, over 1,000 new cases start in the family Courts each working day. This means that now more than ever, where possible, alternative Non-Court Dispute Resolution (NCDR) should be considered to resolve problems outside of Court, helping couples take more control over the process and enabling themselves and their families to move on with their lives more quickly.
Good Divorce Week shines a light on these alternatives, encouraging families to explore constructive solutions such as NCDR. These approaches can reduce stress, save time, and protect relationships, especially where children are involved. For some couples, litigation may well be the only option to resolve their dispute, but far too many families going through separation end up in avoidable and acrimonious Court proceedings.
Alternatives to Court include:
- Mediation – A neutral mediator helps parties reach an agreement. We have 3 mediators in our family team, Deborah Leask, Katie Taft and Asya Panchalieva, who would be happy to assist.
- Collaborative Law – Both parties and their lawyers work together in round-table meetings. Sean McNally is a collaboratively trained lawyer.
- Arbitration – A private arbitrator listens to both sides, reviews evidence and makes a binding decision. Ian Butterworth is a financial arbitrator.
