From Placement Student to Trainee Solicitor: My journey in Wills, Trusts & Probate at Ellis Jones
This article provides insight on Alex Chance's journey from placement student to trainee solicitor in Wills, Trusts & Probate, highlighting the mentors, experiences, and growth that shaped his early career.
I joined Ellis Jones Solicitors LLP as a Placement Student back in 2023 in the Wills, Trusts and Probate (WTP) department, working with Richard Smith (Partner and Solicitor). After my placement year, I was given the opportunity to work part-time alongside my final year studies at Bournemouth University.
Transition to Trainee Solicitor
I decided to stay in the WTP department for my first seat as a Trainee Solicitor as I find the area both technical and fascinating. This was a valuable way to transition from Legal Assistant to Trainee Solicitor.
My experience so far has been highly enriching. Private Client work requires both technical understanding and empathy, as we support clients during some of the most sensitive times in their lives. From day one, I have been encouraged to take ownership of client matters. I have drafted Wills, Codicils, LPAs; attended meetings; assisted with estate administration; liaised with clients and third parties; and much more.
During the first 4 weeks of my Training Contract, I worked directly with Carla Brown (Partner, Solicitor, and Head of Department for Wills, Trusts and Probate) at our Canford Cliffs office. Witnessing her expertise, particularly with High-Net-Worth individuals, was invaluable. Her mentorship helped me identify areas for development and encouraged me to pursue my goals in Private Client law.
Supporting clients in Wimborne
After working with Carla, I moved to the Wimborne office to assist Nicola Hall (Partner and Solicitor). Being from Wimborne, this has been especially meaningful, as I feel connected to the local community and enjoy supporting familiar faces.
Balancing study and practice
Balancing this role with my solicitor apprenticeship study days has allowed me to connect legal theory with practical application. Concepts such as the requirements for a valid Will or the rules of intestacy have taken on new significance when applied to real cases.
Reflecting on my first few months, I can see how much I have grown in confidence and professionalism. Most importantly, I have witnessed the positive impact solicitors can make in their clients’ lives. I am grateful to Carla, Richard, Nicola, and the wider team for their mentorship, and I look forward to continuing my journey towards qualification.
