LGBT+ History Month 2023

This month marks LGBT+ History Month and it was first celebrated in 2005 and takes place throughout February each year to raise awareness of the LGBT+ community’s history and to promote equality.

This year it has the theme of ‘Behind the Lens’ to celebrate contributions to film and cinema, encouraging people to listen to LGBT+ peoples’ lived experiences, this includes directors, screen writers, make up artists musicians and so many more.

LGBT+ History Month was founded in the UK in 2004 by Paul Patrick and Sue Sanders of Schools OUT UK, a charity that aims

“to make our schools and educational institutions safe spaces for the LGBT community” – Schools OUT.

We are proud of the work we do in supporting the LGBT community, through our specialist legal advice. Our services include helping people who are creating families in non-traditional ways, guiding clients through same-sex family disputes, advising on discrimination issues and employment law advice.

Partner Lauren Day, Head of Dispute Resolution and part of Ellis Jones’ dedicated LGBT+ team, said:

“Clear progress has been made for inclusivity and equality in the workplace but there remains a long way to go.

Some LGBT+ employees still face discrimination disguised as humour while others are reluctant to be their authentic selves for fear of bullying or how it may impact their career prospects."
