Married Couples Tax Break

Registration has now opened for a tax break for married couples and civil partners. Initially made public in the 2014 budget it is estimated that the break could save 4 million couples up to £212 a year.

The break enables one partner to transfer £1,060 of their Personal Allowance to their husband, wife or civil partner from the start of the new tax year on 6 April 2015.

This change will predominantly benefit couples where one partner does not work.

Couples may register their interest now or within the next tax year.

Eligibility:

  • Couples where 1 partner earns less than £10,600 (the current Personal Allowance) and the other partner is not a higher or additional rate tax payer will be eligible for the tax break.
  • This does not apply to couples who were born before 6 April 1935 as they are still eligible for married couple’s allowance.

To register or obtain more information visit the government website.
