Impact of COVID-19 on Gambling Behaviour
In a recent press release the UK’s gambling regulatory body, the Gambling Commission, released the findings of its further research into the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic on gambling behavior across the UK. This data, in tandem with previous research, paints a bleak picture for gamblers and shows the unsurprising reality that lockdown has been a major factor in increasing the amount of gambling taking place across the country.
The regulator’s data shows that activity in the online betting and gaming market has steadily continued to increase, including the number of bets, and the number of active players – both of which have particularly increased across online slot games.
Further, a shockingly high percentage of gamblers (some 18% of those asked between Jan-March 2021) confirmed that their gambling had increased since lockdown, which the gambling commission attributes to people spending more time at home and online, and feeling more isolated and vulnerable.
The Gambling Commission already saw a marked increase in gambling as a consequence of the Grand National, and has warned betting and gaming operators to be extra vigilant as we approach the season of increased high-level sporting events.
