Ellis Jones client highlights the danger of dog attacks on Postmen on BBC South Today
BBC South Today yesterday ran a story on the increasing number of dog attacks on Postmen in the South of England. This trend can be seen across the country. The story features a previous client of David McWilliam, Partner and Head of the Personal Injury department at Ellis Jones. David successfully recovered damages for the incident in which Mr Dawson was bitten by a dog whilst delivering letters to a property and this resulted in him having part of his finger amputated. After extensive treatment and an extended period off work, Mr Dawson was able to return to work.
After the incident, the owner of the property was advised to fit a cage to the inside of his letter box or fit an external box for post so that their was no repeat of the incident.
David has dealt with many of these claims and has seen an increase over the last few years. Last year alone, more than 3,300 postmen and women were attacked by dogs. This equates to 9 postmen and women being attacked by dogs everyday which is an increase of 8% in the last 12 months. These can lead to significant scarring and/ or amputation of fingers. This can lead to substantial periods of time off work and thousands of pounds in lost income. David is able to recover damages for the injuries and the loss of earnings. Ellis Jones has a network of local and national Physiotherapists that are happy to treat our injured client’s at no cost to them. This means the client has the best chance to make a full and speedy recovery.
Recent changes to legislation means that dog owners can now be prosecuted for attacks that happen on private property.
Ellis Jones are happy to advise anyone injured in these types of accidents and can act on a No Win, No Fee basis. Call David’s team now if you need our assistance.
