Six on the Beach Channel Relay 2019

On Friday 5th July two of our staff members took part in the challenging Channel Swim Relay in aid of their chosen charities. Jennie Hedges raised money in aid of local boy James Read, and Maxine Bennett fundraised for Level Water. We are extremely proud of their dedication and for fundraising money for such fantastic charities. Our Conveyancing Executive, Jennie Hedges, has explained what happened on the day and some of the challenges faced in the blog below.

12.15am on Friday 5th July 2019, the Team left Dover Marina on board the Sea Leopard piloted by Stuart Gleeson and motored round to the beach at Samphire Hoe. The first swimmer dived off the side of the boat and swam to shore, clearing the water and waiting for the start signal.

At 12.37am Falcon set us off on our adventure, followed hourly by Julia, then Karen and Jason. We were making good progress across the water, all in the dark.

Max was our fifth swimmer, luckily swimming into the sunrise.

Last but not least, I was swimmer six, starting at 5.37am and trying to avoid the pesky tankers!

You don’t really have any concept of time on the boat, you just try and rest, keeping fed and hydrated. Between swims, time was spent encouraging team mates, taking photos and staying warm. One of our team mates, Julia, was terribly sea sick. She was sick in the boat, sick in the sea (whilst swimming) and was mostly green the whole time. She showed much grit and determination in carrying on to the end, as had she had to stop, the whole team would have been disqualified and it is a real testament to her stamina and determination that we succeeded. The last two hours of the swim seemed to take a lifetime. We could see the beach. We could see the sand. It just took forever to get there!

Jason took up the final challenge, and landed on the beach at Sangatte at 4.19pm, a total time of 15 hours 42 minutes.

What a fantastic experience this challenge has been, leaving memories that will last forever.

We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that has donated money so far, your contributions make such a difference!
