Mamma Mia! Italian diet helps power epic bike challenge

David McWilliam, Head of Personal Injury Department at Ellis Jones Solicitors, is hoping a diet of pizza, pasta and red wine will help fuel his attempt to cycle 1,400 miles from Rome to Bournemouth. David is among a team of 20 riders taking part in the ‘Rome 2 Home’ ride.

Organisers hope to raise £20,000 for the Steve Bernard Foundation which supports sporting projects across the south and Third World.

The charity was set up in memory of former Bournemouth School pupil and talented footballer Steve Bernard. The 18-year-old and two friends died in a car accident in Chichester in November 2005.

Steve’s father, Tony, is among the riders taking part in the ‘Rome 2 Home’ ride.

David, a keen cyclist, said the team will set off from the Italian capital on September 19 and plans to reach home by October 3.

“Our first day, alone, will cover 114 miles and on the following days we’ll be covering anything from 80 to 117 miles, including some very hilly areas. It’s going to be pretty physical,” said David.

He added: “I’ve known Tony for several years and the work of the Steve Bernard Foundation is just fantastic. It will be worth all the pain just to raise money for such a worthy cause.

“I have cycled 3,500 miles this year in training so feel up for the challenge. Of course, a good Italian diet of pizza, pasta, ice cream with an accompanying glass, or two, of red wine does wonders in terms of providing much-needed energy!

Tony said the team of riders will be supported by two physiotherapists and two drivers.

“The support we’ve received has been amazing. We’re hoping that if we’re successful in raising £20,000 then this will take us through the £250,000 barrier since launching the foundation in 2006,” he added.
