London cyclist accidents on the increase, with 22,988 accidents involving cyclists over five years

Summer 2014 saw record numbers of Londoners out on their bikes and cycling, with a 173 per cent increase since 2001.

Unfortunately, the increase in the number of cyclists has contributed to an increase in accidents involving cyclists in recent years. The Department for Transport recently published figures which showed that there were 22,988 motor accidents involving cyclists in London between 2009 and 2013, which equates to more than 12 accidents every day. The published figures also show that cyclist casualties are on the increase, showing an 8% rise in the number of cyclists killed or seriously injured.

Tragically, there have been four cyclist deaths in London this year, with the most recent being last week at a busy junction in Victoria when a mother of two died.

We would therefore urge cyclists to take care when out cycling. The CTC, the National Cycling Charity, has published 10 safety tips for cycling in traffic.
