‘Car dooring’ awareness campaign backed by four time Olympic champion

Laura Kenny is not only one of Great Britain’s greatest Olympians but has this week helped launch a campaign to highlight to motorists the dangers posed to cyclists when opening their car doors. Research suggests that up to 65% of cyclists have been knocked off their bikes by a motorist opening their car door into their path. 54% of those were injured and 78% ended up in hospital due to the severity of their injuries.

David McWilliam, Partner & Head of Personal Injury who specialises in cycle accident claims has seen an increase in these types of claims over the years. The cyclist has no time to react and will be thrown off their bike landing heavily in the road. This can lead to serious injuries to shoulders and wrists. I have dealt with serious shoulder and wrist fractures requiring operations and metalwork. This requires long term rehabilitation and time off work.

The campaign simply highlights the issue to drivers and passengers. When you want to get out of the parked car, look and reach across to the handle with your far hand, not your nearest hand. This will naturally make your body turn and be able to see the road behind and any oncoming traffic including cyclists or motorcyclists. It is an easy and practical way to reduce these types of accidents. It is a part of the driving test in Holland.

If you have been involved in a cycling accident, such as these cases involving car dooring, you may be entitled to compensation. Do not hesitate to contact out expert cycling injury solicitors on 01202 525333 or send an email enquiry.
